Cliff & coast

Keep back from the edge. Know the tide.

Coastlines are beautiful and unforgiving. Cliff edges can be undercut and unstable, rock can be slippery, and tides and waves can cut off routes quickly.

01

On cliff paths

  • Stay on marked paths and well back from edges, especially in wind or after rain
  • Keep children and dogs under close control near drops
  • Never pose or take photographs close to an edge
  • Respect closures and warning signs — they are there for a reason

02

On the shore

  • Check tide times before walking beneath cliffs or around headlands
  • Watch for large or unexpected waves and stay off exposed rocks in rough seas
  • Know your exit route and allow time to use it

03

If someone is in difficulty

In Ireland, call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard for coastal and cliff emergencies. Do not enter the water or descend a cliff to attempt a rescue yourself.
